There are many types of pizza and New York style pizza is between the most popular of them. Unfortunately, unlike Italian pizza which could be found anywhere anytime, New York-style pizza could be found only in New York. And since New York is way too far for some of us, let’s make an effort and prepare New York style pizza like a real New Yorker, completely by ourselves.
What do we need?
- 6 cups flour (used for bread)
- 2 ¼ cups water
- 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2.5 teaspoons Salt
- 1 pound shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Romano cheese
- ¼ cup chopped fresh basil
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 can tomato sauce
Did you get all the ingredients? Perfect! Now let’s follow the steps and “bring New York” at our homes:
Step 1. Put water in a mixing bowl.
Step 2. Take another bowl and mix the salt, yeast, and sugar into the flour
Step 3. Once you mix the previously mentioned ingredients, put them in the water and mix until the flour has been incorporated.
Step 4. Add oil and knead for around 5 minutes.
Step 5. Divide dough into 4 pieces in a shape of a ball, put them in oiled container and let them rise in a warm place for at least 30 minutes.
Step 6. After 30 minutes, take the dough and knead it again until it is nice and smooth.
Step 7. Carefully stretch the dough into flat disc until it could no longer be stretched. It should be around 14″-16″ in diameter.
Step 8. Open the tomato sauce can and spread the sauce all over the dough. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese, oregano, Romano cheese, red peppers flakes and basil.
Step 9. Bake in preheated oven for around 12-15 minutes.
Step 10. Cut it into slices and let it cool for around 5 minutes. In a meanwhile, grab a nice, cold beer and come back to eat the delicious slices of your New York style pizza like a real New Yorker! Remember to fold the slices and make a nice cheese stretch when you grab the first bite – it’s what true New Yorkers do when they eat their New York style pizza!
